Rock Star
Starring: Mark Wahlburg, Jennifer Aniston, Timothy Olyphant, Dominic West, and Jason Flemyng
Directed by: Stephen Herek
Synopsis: A wannabe rock singer gets his big break when he is kicked out of the cover band that he started and is offered to replace the very lead singer he imitates of the very same band he idolizes. He and his girlfriend/manager begin to be sucked into the '80's hair band sex, drugs, and rock and roll music scene. Naturally, as his star rises to the top, he loses sight of himself and of what really matters to him.
My thoughts: When I saw the previews for this I thought, "Wow. This movie's going to do for '80's hair band music what Almost Famous did for '70's classic rock. But "Steel Dragon was no "Stillwater"; Emily (Anistion) was no Penny Lane; Rock Star is No Almost Famous.
Instead of savoring every minute with wide-eyed wonder, I had to sit through a mediocre storyline, about an hour (in total) of concert footage, and scenes of gratuitous immorality to reach the film's message (be yourself). What a disappointment. Wahlburg's awesome portrayal of our rock star made the film at least entertaining, however. You could tell he put his soul into the performance.
Score: 6 out of 10
